Bhut Jolokia, also known as Naga Jolokia, is a type of chili pepper, specifically a cultivar of the Capsicum chinense species. In terms of origin, it is essentially a partial hybrid between Capsicum chinense and Capsicum frutescens. It has a fresh, fruity flavor reminiscent of green apples and lemon.
For a long time (until 2007), this pepper was considered the hottest chili pepper in the world.
It originates from Bangladesh and the neighboring region of Assam in northeastern India. It grows in the Indian states of Assam, Nagaland, and Manipur, and in Bangladesh in the Sylhet region. It can also be found in Sri Lanka, where it is known as Nai Mirris (Cobra Chilli).
In India, it is used as a homeopathic remedy for stomach ailments, as a spice, and also as protection against heat (by increasing perspiration, which lowers body temperature). In northeastern India, it is smeared on fences or added to smoke bombs to protect against wild elephants. It is also used as a weapon in smoke grenades (e.g., to drive an opponent from cover) and as a highly effective pepper spray.
